NC 16's Black in Gold Bracket (Open Div) at ECC

The NCVBC 16's black team completed their season with a great finish at the Emerald City Classic!  After holding our seed of 25 on day one by defeating all 3 opponents in our pool we moved to round two knowing we needed to pick up our play if we wanted to be successful.

Our first match of the day was against the #1 seed in the tourney, WVBA 16 Shannon.  We came out strong and played well the entire match but eventually lost 22-25, 17-25.  Our 2nd match was against the #8 seed, Above the Net 16's.  It was a hard fought match with a lot of ups and downs but we prevailed in 3, 20-25, 25-16, 18-16. Next up, Kent Juniors Baden.  Our great play continued and once again we came out on top with a score of 26-24, 25-20.  We went 2-1 on the day and earned the opportunity for a crossover match which would determine whether or not we would play in gold or silver. On day 3, the fatigue seemed evident but once again this team showed heart and beat their opponent in a 3 game match 25-20, 18-25, 15-9.  It wasn't pretty but we got the job done!  Our next match didn't work out quite as well.  After starting strong we seemed to lose confidence as game 1 progressed and eventually lost the match 17-25, 23-25.  However, even in game 2 when it was looking bleak the team rallied to make a match of it.

I would like to point out the great play of Kiana Miller who had an outstanding tournament for us.  Her serve was tough and consistent. We consistently scored points when she was at the service line.  Her serve receive was solid and her defense was great.  We couldn't have asked for more from a defensive specialist!

Great job NCVBC 16's Black.  It's been an amazing year with great athletes AND great parents.  You have made this a rewarding coaching experience---thanks!  Good luck this fall.  Rachel and I will be pulling for all of you to put together great seasons.
